Do You Know? Festival in Japan
Himeji Yukata Festival (姫路ゆかたまつり), the largest festival of its kind in Japan! Taking place every June in Himeji City near the famous Himeji Castle. This festival is held for the local god of Himeyama of Osakabe Shrine (長壁神社) and this tradition goes back to a ceremony that took place about 260 years ago. Originally this place of worship is located on a hill in the city, was not accessible to the public. In 1742, the lord of Himeji Castle decided to bring the temple closer to the town center for its people. A party was quickly organized to celebrate this event but due to the short notice, the Japanese could not buy kimono, so the Lord therefore allowed them to wear a yukata, giving birth to Himeji Yukata Matsuri.
